Restaurants, pubs & Cafes
Wiltshire and the surrounding area boast many great restaurants, pubs, and cafes, may of which are dog friendly. Well worth a visit is the historic neighbouring market town of Marlborough, which is typically around 15 minutes drive from Willowbank Lodges. Marlborough offers a wide selection of boutique shops, eateries and cafes. There are also many other local historic villages and market towns, each offering a great selection of traditional country pubs and shops selling fresh local produce. 'Must visit' places include nearby Honeystreet Wharf and Cafe in Honeystreet village and Marshall's bakery, which is located within a few minutes drive of Willowbank Lodges, in the heart of Pewsey village .
Ideas for days out
There are musical events which take place in local pubs, churches and village halls. In July, Marlborough holds its famous International Jazz Festival over three days – a glut of musicians and singers, new bands and old favourites from all over the world, really an experience not to miss. There are other nearby venues for musical events such as Westonbirt Arboretum and Highclere Castle, location of the BBC's 'Downton Abbey', which has summer picnic concerts and firework displays. Local artists open their studios over four weekends in July and there are always local village fetes to be enjoyed throughout most of the summer. There really is something for everyone to enjoy in this part of the world.
Activities nearby
From Willowbank’s gates we have marvellous walks without having to cross a main road. The Kennet & Avon Canal is located within 100m of the cabins, great for a spot of fishing or a relaxing walk. From Milkhouse Water bridge you can walk or cycle along the canal path to Wootton Rivers and beyond towards the Savernake Forest and Hungerford. We have our local wetlands sanctuary, Jones's Mill, about half a mile away or walk up the lane and follow the steep footpath to the top of Martinsell Hill, one of seven 6th century iron-age hill forts surrounding the Pewsey Vale. Honeystreet is only approximately 10 minutes' drive from the site and is also well worth an explore, especially for a coffee and a cake!
Activities further afield
We are very privileged to be living in an area steeped in tradition and history, with three World Heritage sites within an easy driving distance (Stonehenge, Avebury and Bath). Longleat Safari Park is approximately a hours drive away and we have a quick rail link to London from Pewsey Station. Oxford, Salisbury and Bath are also within a reasonable drive away and offer good shopping, restaurants, theatres and interesting places to visit.
